Since 1991, Michigan State University through the Food Security Group (FSG) has carried-out or assisted in a large number of household surveys in Mozambique. These surveys have ranged from geographically focused studies designed to address specific policy issues, to assistance to Ministry of Agriculture (MINAG) in its National Agricultural Survey, also know as TIA (Trabalho de Inquerito Agricola).
Below are brief descriptions of each survey, links to downloadable questionnaires, and Data Sharing Policy for MINAG and MSU.
Data Sets Owned by the Ministry of Agriculture (MINAG)
The Ministry of Agriculture of Mozambique (MINAG) has intellectual ownership of the TIA Surveys. For each TIA, Michigan State University (MSU) has generated a crop-level production file (in standardized units) that MINAG provides to analysts along with the archived TIA data. For each ‘full’ TIA (that includes components measuring non-farm income), MSU has also generated variables for total household income and the main components of total household income; these income variables are owned by MSU.
Access Policy. Inquiries regarding access to the TIA data sets should be directed to the Directorate of Economics at the Ministry of Agriculture in Mozambique, care of Aurelio Mate at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
As of 2012, MINAG began a revised series of surveys for the household sector, known as the Integrated Agricultural Surveys. These surveys are to integrate the Crop and Livestock Production Estimates previously known as "Early Warning" (Aviso Previo) with the post-harvest estimates obtained with TIA.
The following are the TIA Surveys undertaken since 1996, with the respective instruments:

Data Sets Owned by Michigan State University (MSU)
MSU has also contributed to several other survey data sets from Mozambique in the context of various studies and owns the rights to some of those data sets.
Access Policy. As a general policy, survey data from Mozambique that is owned by MSU is released to the public 24 months after the completion of data cleaning. After this 24-month period, MSU will provide this data to any analyst wishing to use it, along with all documentation. The released data will typically include crop production figures in standardized units, land area estimates, and total household income, along with the syntax and lookup files used to produce them. Datasets owned by MSU include the following:
2014 Horticultural Costs of Production Survey conducted as part of the Trilateral partnership between Mozambique, the United States and Brazil
Horticultural Survey (2013)
In spring of 2013, MSU working in conjunction with the Mozambican Institute for Agricultural Research (IIAM) conducted a survey of approximately 700 horticultural farmers in key areas supplying Maputo with fresh produce (Zonas Verdes of the city and districts of Boane and Moamba).
2008-2011 Partial Panel Survey
Other recent data sets to which MSU contributed:
- MCC Surveys of the Land Tenure Services Project Impact Evaluation
These surveys are undertaken in Urban and Rural Areas of Zambézia, Nampula, Cabo Delgado and Niassa Provinces. MCC/MCA and the Ministry of Agriculture of Mozambique own these data sets.
- Feed-the-Future Gross Margins Surveys (2012)
These surveys are owned by USAID and are released only to the participating USAID Program Partners.
- MCC Farmer Income Support Project (FISP): Survey of Coconut Farmers 2008/2009.
