Towards Sustainable Nutrition Improvement in Rural Mozambique (TSNI)
TSNI is an action research project based in Zambézia Province, Mozambique. Its objective is to determine whether a food-based intervention strategy can lead to sustainable, year-round intake of vitamin-A rich foods, reduced fluctuations in seasonal household calorie supply, and an overall improvement of diet diversity, nutritional status and diet quality in a cost-effective manner, particularly among children under five years of age. The project integrates nutritional, agronomic, and socio-economic components to achieve this objective. Activities began October 2002, and will continue through March, 2005.

Survey Instruments and Data Documentation Top
TSNI is conducting a number of household surveys over the project period to quantify the impact of food based interventions. The baseline survey was conducted on 840 households, beginning in January 2003. A total of 741 households participated in the last survey round (Round 4) during November 2004 through January 2005. All surveys, with the exception of the monthly price survey, were conducted in the dominant local language, Chuabo. Below, survey instruments are presented in English, Portuguese, and Chuabo.
The Baseline Survey was implemented on a sample of 840 households, including target and control households. The first half of the survey, Part A, was conducted during January and February 2003.
The second part of the survey, Part B, is Round 1 of the serum retinol and anthropometric data collection. In addition, recall morbidity data were obtained for all reference children during the 2 weeks prior to the survey. 826 households participated in Part B during the months of May, June, and July 2003.
Consumption and Expenditure Surveys
Two rounds of 24 hour recall surveys, an annual recall of major non-food expenditures, and a harvest season recall of food expenditures were conducted in both target and control areas. The first round was implemented in August-October of 2003; the second in August-October 2004.
Round 2 of Nutritional Status Survey
Biological indicators (anthropometry, serum retinol) and morbidity status during the two weeks prior to the study were assessed at six month intervals. Round 2 was conducted in both target and control areas during the months of November and December of 2003.
The Mid-Term Assessment sought to capture production levels of major staple food crops, and detailed additional information on the 1st year experience of target households cultivating beta-carotene-rich sweet potato. Diet diversity and income status indicators were also collected. The Mid-Term Assessment was only implemented in target areas during the months of March and April 2004.
Round 3 of Nutritional Status Survey
Round 3 was only conducted among target households during the months of May and June 2004.
Round 4 of Nutritional Status Survey and Final Round of Data Collection
From mid-November 2004 through mid-January 2005, the final Round of the Nutritional Status Survey was conducted in both target and control areas. This was followed by visits to each survey home in January-February 2005 to conduct a follow-up survey on agricultural production for 2004, focusing on the experience cultivating beta-carotene rich sweet potatoes. The nutritional knowledge of both women and men interviewed at baseline was reassessed. In total, 741 households completed the study.
Either on the 3rd or 4th Saturday of every month during the years 2003 and 2004, price data (weights and reported selling price) were collected in 5 major markets in the study area: Quelimane (Provincial Capital), Namacurra (district capital), Lualua (Locality), Mexixine (Locality), and Licuari (Locality).
